Singapore’s Global Maritime Decarbonisation Centre adopts blockchain in biofuel pilot project
August 6 – Singapore’s Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) is leading a consortium of 18 companies in a pilot project to test the use of biofuels as a bunker fuel for ships. In this pilot project, blockchain and traceability startup Bunker Trace is responsible for using synthetic DNA and blockchain technology to track the bunker footprint.
Harmony updates findings on theft: Phishing attack, approximately 64,000 wallets affected
On August 6, Harmony posted details of the theft of nearly $100 million from Crosschain Bridge, stating that it was a coordinated attack and phishing attack on its internal infrastructure, affecting approximately 64,000 wallets. To date, there is no evidence that Crosschain Bridge smart contracts or blockchain protocols have been compromised. Specifically, decrypting cross-chain bridge keys requires multiple operations in a secure set of servers to generate the keys instantly on servers with privileged access (authorised roles). Harmony believes the attackers 1) used a phishing scheme to trick at least one software developer into installing malware on their laptop, 2) enabled the attackers to read chat threads to learn how to operate the cross-chain bridges and/or gain access to non-public cross-link bridge infrastructure code, and 3) gain backdoor access to one or more servers in order to execute the hack. The perpetrators succeeded in doing all three.
