Zuckerberg: Horizon Worlds and Avatar graphics to receive major updates
August 21 – Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has posted his latest personal Avatar photo and Horizon Worlds detailed scene image on Instagram, saying that Horizon Worlds and Avatar graphics are due for a major update. It was reported that earlier this week Zuckerberg’s social media announcement of the official launch of his metaverse platform Horizon Worlds in France and Spain accompanied by a selfie of his avatar with the Eiffel Tower was met with much derision from the tech industry press and practitioners, who claimed that after investing tens of billions of dollars in the metaverse the results were only at the 1995 Nintendo Game Boy graphics level.
Hackers exploit zero-day vulnerability to steal cryptocurrency from General Bytes’ Bitcoin ATMs
August 21 – Hackers are stealing cryptocurrency from customers using a zero-day vulnerability in the servers of bitcoin ATMs owned by General Bytes, a manufacturer of bitcoin ATMs that allow people to buy or sell more than 40 different cryptocurrencies, depending on the product. These ATMs are controlled by its own Cryptographic Application Server (CAS), and according to a security bulletin issued by it, the vulnerability in question has been present in the CAS software since version 20201208. It is known that hackers modify buy and sell encryption settings and ‘invalid payment addresses’ to transfer any cryptocurrency received by CAS to the hacker’s wallet address, and it is unclear how many servers have been compromised by this vulnerability and how much cryptocurrency has been stolen.
