Chipmaker Nvidia’s crypto mining chip revenue continues to fall

Golden Finance reports that chip giant Nvidia said that sales of its cryptocurrency mining processors (CMPs) were “minimal” in the second quarter of its fiscal 2023, which ended on July 31, down from $266 million a year ago. NVIDIA had used the same terminology to describe CMP sales in the previous quarter, when it noted that CMPs were a drag on revenue from its “OEM and other” business units. NVIDIA’s chief financial officer said that overall revenue in the “OEM and other” business unit fell 66 percent to $140 million in the second quarter from a year ago, driven by lower notebook OEM sales. The “OEM and others” segment contributed only about 2 percent of total revenue in the second quarter. According to FactSet, Nvidia’s total revenue for the second quarter was $6.7 billion, in line with average market expectations, after saying in early August that it expected revenue of $6.7 billion, well below its previous estimate of $8.1 billion, mainly due to lower gaming revenue.
